Description: Tracy Turnblad (Nikki Blonsky), an overweight teenager with all the right moves, is obsessed with the Corny Collins Show. Every day after school, she and her best friend Penny (Amanda Bynes)run home to watch the show and drool over the hot Link Larkin (Zac Efron), much to Tracy's mother Edna's (John Travolta) dismay. After one of the stars of the show leaves, Corny Collins (Jason Marsden) holds auditions to see who will be the next person on the Corny Collins show. With all of the help of her friend Seaweed (Elijah Kelly), Tracy makes it on the show, angering the evil dance queen Amber Von Tussle (Brittany Snow) and her mother Velma (Michelle Pfieffer). Tracy then decides that it's not fair that the black kids can only dance on the Corny Collins Show once a month, and with the help of Seaweed, Link, Penny, Motormouth Maybelle (Queen Latifah), her father (Christopher Walken) and Edna, she's going to integrate the show.....without denting her 'do!
OK for Kids? Not really. I probably wouldn't let my kids watch this until they are 16 or so, if then. There is quite a bit of implied intimacy, and the dancing at some points is the bumping/grinding type. There are a few mild cuss words.
See it in theater or rent? I would suggest that if you were going to see this movie - wait and rent it. It will not lose anything on the smaller screen.
Opinion: Hairspray was a fun movie with a good theme. I took my grandmother to see this movie, she just had to see John Travolta dressed up as a woman! I had never seen the play before. The theme was double-fold but boiled down to "love others" - despite their color or their weight. The cast was great, they all did an excellent job with their parts.

I liked this movie.
I saw it this past week. I thought it was a great chic flick. It was longer than the original and from what I can remember, was a little bit different -- ie. I don't remember them "marching" in the original, and the ending was not the same. I loved how Ricki Lake made a cameo. Just in case you haven't seen the first one, she was the orginal Tracy.
I saw Hairspray last week and admit that I disliked it. I was bored. I really am not into musicals; I always feel like giggling when they go into a song and dance number....
Bind, on the other hand, ADORED this movie. She said it took everything she had not to get up and dance in the aisle.
So..to each his or her own, I suppose.
