Monday Movie Review

Movie Review #8

3:10 to Yuma

Starring: Russell Crowe, Christian Bale (need I say more?)

Rated: Rated R for violence and some language.

Type of Movie: Western

Description: The legendary outlaw, Ben Wade (Russell Crowe) and his gang have just robbed an armed stage coach carrying the Southern Pacific Railroads payroll. They kill everyone onboard except Pinkerton guard, Byron McElroy (Peter Fonda) whom Wade shoots in the belly. A poor rancher Dan Evans (Christian Bale) and his two sons find McElroy and take him to Bisbee, Arizona to find a doctor. Ben Wade is in town without his gang and the sheriff immediately surrounds the hotel. Dan distracts Ben Wade, who is captured without a shot being fired. Railroad representative Grayson Butterfield (Dallas Roberts) asks for paid volunteers to join McElroy's posse to take Wade to the train station in the town of Contention three days away. The train is due at 3:10, and they must put Wade on the train's prison car bound for Yuma. Once Wade arrives in Yuma, he will receive a quick trial in Federal Court and be hanged. Dan Evans, desperately needing money to save his farm, agrees to help transport Wade to Contention but he must be paid $200. The other paid volunteers who join the posse are Tucker (Kevin Durand) and Doc Potter (Alan Tudyk), the town's veterinarian. Unfortunately for the posse, Charlie Prince (Ben Foster), Wade's right hand man, sees what has happened to Wade, and he goes after the rest of the gang to help liberate Wade.Despite a deception to fool the gang, the odds move in their favour, and in the end it's Dan's desire to impress his sons that means getting him on the train becomes a personal battle of wills.

OK for Kids? No, not at all.

Opinion: Two excellent actors. Very violent. Some bad language. I'm going to be honest here, If you want the review of a Christian who wouldn't see this movie please click here - it is a great review. I agree with a lot of what it said. I just didn't view it all that way. Maybe I am too wordly. I just don't know. I just know I enjoyed the movie. Following is a comment on the movie from the website of the review - this person said pretty much exactly how I felt, so no need for me to write it up myself and claim it as my own: I don't believe Evans took money to kill. I believe Evans took money to escort a prisoner through hostile territory, which is a very brave and noble thing. I also believe that Evans was a Christian, but he lost his way or his faith was wavering because he lost his leg by one of his own men and didn't get much to compensate for it. I believe Evans also saw an opportunity to provide a positive role model to his son by not taking money from the outlaw and by being brave enough to escort the prisoner when others were cowards. This was important because Evans’ son thought he was a coward, and in the beginning it seemed as if Evans’ son was at risk to following in the footsteps of the outlaw.I believe Evans saw an opportunity to earn the money he needed for his family and cattle by escorting a prisoner to a prison train. Any killing he did was in self-defense and not gratuitous. Evans did not waver in his morals. Prior to seeing the movie, the previews did not provide much plot summary, so I was surprised that most of the characters were bad, though some seemed worse than others. I was going to walk out when I realized it was mostly about outlaws or oppressors (the man who wanted to keep the water from flowing to Evans' land). However, I stayed to see if Evans would fall victim to the lusts of the world like all the other characters in the movie. I was pleasantly surprised to discover he kept to his morals and accomplished his goal in spite of the price he had to pay.I disagree with the reviewer about Evans' killing so he can get the water rights for his cattle. I believe in that day and age gun slinging was the norm and shooting was either in self defense or so one could do something evil, like Ben Wade and his crew killing to steal. I believe bounty hunters in that day and age had to kill or be killed to catch their bounty and for lawmen to maintain order. They didn't have all the laws and technology to catch outlaws back then the way they do now. Also, from the westerns I've seen and not having lived during that time, outlaws didn't have a problem with shooting people to avoid capture, so it seems a necessity for lawmen or bounty hunters to follow suit. Please don't misunderstand me. I am not saying killing is right, but when you're in a war and completely outnumbered and outgunned it's a matter of survival. I think we need to remember the context. They didn't have bulletproof vests, rubber bullets, or gas canisters to use against the outlaws. If the bounty hunters, lawmen, etcetera didn't use guns, they would've been killed themselves and there would've been no order. Not that I agree with Mangold's message, but his message may be that just because someone can quote the Bible, doesn't mean he's good or has a close personal relationship with God. Paul stated the same thing in Romans 3, among other books and chapters.Overall, the language wasn't that bad. (The movie “Bad Boys 2” was much, much worse). There were no sex scenes, though it's alluded to with one character doing a sketch of another, kind of like in “Titanic.” Also, I appreciated the authenticity of the sets and wardrobe.

So, after looking over all this - you can decide if seeing this is right for you. If you go - enjoy. If not, I totally understand.

Let me know if you've seen it what you thought and if you're not going to see it - why?!

Babbling . . . . .

I have always struggled with guilt. Guilt over being a working mother. Guilt over watching a particular TV show or movie. Guilt over not letting my HWH have the remote everytime he wants to take it from me. Guilt for yelling at my children (even though they ignored me the first 3 times I asked them nicely).
My feelings of guilt are not as oppressing as they used to be. But I still get them. And when I think about it and be truly honest about it perhaps it's more an attack of conscience then guilt. Because all the above that I said I feel guilty for doing/watching, probably aren't "right".

I don't think I'm the only one who struggles with this. And perhaps if I yielded myself completely to Christ and not the things of this world. If I did what is "right" - stopped working, stopped watching a particular TV show, gave my HWH the remote every time, was more patient with my kids - then I would have more peace. I'm 35 years old and I just haven't found the guts, self control, and discipline needed for all that. I know "I" will never have it and at some point I will have to depend on Christ for all strength.

I know I'm rambling - but these are my inner demons and this is where I choose to write about them.

I'm Back!

I was out of town for business. I stayed at the Marriott Waterside in Norfolk, VA. (Click here to read my Marriott vs. Hilton article!) Another great stay at a Marriott!

Here are a couple great posts at some other blogs that I missed and caught up on today. Be sure to check them out if you missed them too!

Rocks In My Dryer - Never Underestimate the Ability of A Boy (my youngest two are so into doing this right now! Get them together with their cousins and it's a symphony!)
An Island Life - Giving Flight Attendants a Bad Name (that they are even allowed to have a .40 to fly is awful! What if there is an accident - I want them sober enough to do their job/help out! I am not allowed to drink during work hours and I sit at a desk all day! Beautiful blog by the way!)
Callipidder Days - Fall into Reading 2007 - Get your Fall Reading list together and post here on Sunday 9/23! I'm so excited!
Holy Mama - Club 17, September - great story and great reminder!
Brock Gill - jkjdkjff. part 2 - He, his wife, his team are all making a huge impact on youth, telling them about Christ in new and creative ways! I hope to see his show one day!

Well, have a great week!

Gift of the Lord

"Behold, children are a gift of the LORD" Psalm 127:3

Sometimes it is hard for me to remember this.
I have 3 gifts - eldest boy - age 12, only girl - age 10, and youngest boy - age 5.
When they are constantly at each other for days at a time - arguing, complaining, whining, crying, showing me boo-boo after boo-boo, telling me constantly about aches and pains - I just wanna yell "CALGON, TAKE ME AWAY"!
But, I am so very blessed.
Many are unable to have children - I can simply think about getting pregnant and it seems to happen.
I have known several children who have passed away the past few years - one I knew fairly well, the others just through friends and such. Still, it is very difficult when that happens. I put myself in the parent's place and imagine their pain, terror, sadness. Though I know what I can imagine is only an ounce of what it is really like.
Friday a 6 year old boy at my sister's church went to bed, fine and healthy as far as the parents knew. He never woke up. He was a sweet little boy, full of love and fun, he loved Christ and had already asked Jesus to be his Savior.
I am praying for his family. And I am reminded to honor and cherish my children as the gift from God that they are. I looked at my youngest two as I dropped them off at school today. Told them I loved them, gave them an extra hug, and prayed for their safety.
I am so grateful for them. They really are the joy in my life. Yes, they drive me crazy. But they are soooo sweet, soooo cute, and the most wonderful gift I could have ever asked for.

OOOPS! I forgot Movie Review Monday!

I was just looking over my blog and realized I forgot this week's Movie Review Monday! So, since you are all sitting on the edge of your seats awaiting my opinion - here goes!

Movie Review #7
Fantastic Four 2: Rise of the Silver Surfer

Starring: Michael Chiklis, Jessica Alba, Chris Evans, Ioan Gruffudd

Rated: Rated PG for sequences of action violence, some mild language and innuendo.

Type of Movie: Action, Adventure, Comedy, Science Fiction, Fantasy, Superhero

Description: With Von Doom back in his homeland of Latveria the fantastic four have new troubles when Galactus has decided that Earth is his next target. When his henchman, The Silver Surfer (Norrin Radd), is sent to Earth he discovers that he's getting more than he bargained for when he encounters the Fantastic Four. But that's not all when Dr. Doom decides that after two years in the homeland he is ready to return.

OK for Kids? Depends - on how much bad language you are comfortable with them hearing. There are a few uses of the "A" word and "C*AP", and maybe a few others. A few suggestive lines as well.

See it in theater or rent? Rent, if you see it. Don't think it's at the theater anymore. If you rent, definitely use RED BOX, to rent for $1 a night. I wouldn't want to pay Blockbuster's $4.5 to see it.

Opinion: I took my 12 year old son and his friend to see this movie. It wasn't as good as the first Fantastic Four. I wish the language had not been so bad, but, and this doesn't excuse him hearing it - he does hear worse at school everyday (even at Christian summer camps he hears worse - but don't get me started!). Luckily (as far as I know) my son does not use this language and knows better . . . .

The story line kept me entertained, but it was nothing special and if you don't see it you aren't missing anything!

More Organized, well kinda

OK, not to be proud or boastful or anything. Really, it is just that I'm crawling out of the pathetic hole I have sunk into. But I am thankful to the Lord, that He has helped me stick with this -

For about a month now we have been eating dinner at the table as a family 5 out of 7 nights per week. That is new for us - we always have eaten in front of the TV at different times of the evening.

Also, I have gotten back into the habit of doing family devotions 5 out of 7 nights per week. The kids do personal devotions 5 out of 7 nights as well.

Now, I wish I could say I have been as diligent in my own personal devotions, but . . . .

Anyways, with eating dinner together, I have been cooking a lot more. I think this is helping the kids to be healthier, and to eat in a more timely manner (they would eat so slow in front of the TV!)

I have been reading blogs where they plan out their menu for the week. I am going to try to do this too. To keep me organized and less stressed about dinners.

Monday - I had Girl Scouts - special dinner at the meeting. The boys fielded for themselves.

Tuesday - Kilbasa, mac & cheese (whole wheat SuperMac - so good!), oranges

Wednesday - Sarge's EZ Pulled Pork (we have church Wed. night - so after I get home from work, only have about 1 hr. home before we have to leave for church. Crock Pot meal is a must for Wednesday's), plus fruit and can of veggies

Thursday - Another awesome Crock Pot meal plus fruit and can of veggies

Friday - HWH and I are going to a retirement dinner for his parent's. Kids will have leftovers.

Saturday - FOOTBALL! Tailgating - probably Fried Chicken!

Sunday - not sure yet. Would like to try an italian dish I wrote down the recipe for, with some garlic bread and a salad.

Monday the 17th - Mini Cheddar Meatloaves

See, you blogging SAHM and Home School mom's are a good influence on me! Plus, props to Christ who is convicting me on this one. My kid's have to suffer enough as it is with my decision to work - I need to work harder to be the best Mom I can be. Well, that's a whole nother post!

New Casting Crowns CD - Part 1.

I broke down and finally downloaded the new Casting Crowns CD "The Altar and the Door" today at itunes. It was only $10, but I have a HUGE final payment due to Home Depot at the end of the month for carpet bought a year ago. But, I just could. not. resist. any longer! And it was so worth it! It was actually worth much more than $10. This group has such a talent for putting into words my views of faith, life, etc. Their lyrics are sooooo awesome!

1. What the World Believes - "What this world needs is for us to stop hiding behind our relevance, blending in so well people can't see the difference." Could not be better spoken.

2. Every Man - Every word in this song touches someone. "I'm every broken man, nervous child, lonely wife." "Jesus is hope for every man" Amen.

3. Slow Fade - Oh, how true! "It's a slow fade when you give yourself away - Thought's invade, choices are made, a price will be paid - When you give yourself away - people never crumble in a day - Daddies never crumble in a day - Families never crumble in a day." God please guide us!

4. East to West - "I can't live by what I feel But by the truth your word reveals." Oh, keep me faithful to your Word!

5. The Word Is Alive - "The world and it's glories will fade - But His truth, it will not pass away." Thank you Jesus!

OK that is half the album! All I have time for today! I'll try to do the rest tomorrow. But trust me - just go download the CD tonight - you won't regret it! Tomorrow I'll try to have a favorite song picked out from this CD. If you already have the CD - do you have a favorite?

Fabulous Fall Freebies!

I am in mourning . . . . . . .

Summer 2007 is gone. It was one filled with with fun times and scary ones too. I am always sad when summer ends, it is my very favorite season. I love the beach, I love the chances to go to the sandy shore and read, relax, play with the kids soak in the sun. Now, what will keep me going is knowing that on Valentine's Day 2008 I am going on a 10 day cruise!

In honor of the passing of summer '07 I have a few items to giveaway. This summer has been one where I have learned about blogging and tried my hand at it. I am grateful to my few, faithful readers. Sometimes I wonder why I am spending the time or energy on this. But, I think it is bringing me closer to what it is I am supposed to do, but have not yet had the courage to attempt. We'll see what 2008 holds in that arena.

Bush Gardens Trip!

My sister and I, along with our Mom, are taking our kids (my 3, her 2 older) to Bush Gardens on Saturday. We are driving up to Williamsburg tonight, staying (for free with Dad's points) in an Embassy Suites, then hitting the park tomorrow when it open at 10am. Surprising as it is, it looks like the 7 and 10 yr old can ride some of the bigger roller coasters, they are going to be so excited about that! They won't be able to ride the largest ones, so that will be just 12 yr old, sister and me. I am soooo excited, I love roller coasters! I'm just praying the kids are all good and get along! (Also praying I find the DVD cord that goes to the lighter so they can watch movies on the way there!)

Computer Problems!

My computer at home is awaiting a new motherboard. (That sounds so scary! I feel like I could be abducted at any moment!) The 2nd one in 3 months - on a computer less than a year old. Joy!
I am working on getting the new contest posted, and will try to get it done today, at the latest - tomorrow. But, I do have some work to do here at work, so I guess that must take priority!

Movie Review Monday - Penguins Anyone?

Movie Review # 5
This week I am reviewing 2 older movies - both animated movies, with penguins as the main characters. Both are available on DVD.
Surf's Up
Starring: Voices of: Shia LeBeouf, Jeff Bridges, Zooey Deschanel, Jon Heder, James Woods
Rated: PG for some mild launguage and rude humor
Type of Movie: Animated "mockumentary"
Description: "Surf's Up" is based on the groundbreaking revelation that surfing was actually invented by penguins. In the film, a documentary crew will take audiences behind the scenes and onto the waves during the most competitive, heartbreaking and dangerous display of surfing known to man, the Penguin World Surfing Championship.
OK for Kids? Yes. I let my kids see this movie and they enjoyed it. There was quite a bit of potty humor which some parents will object to. So far, my kids do not seem to have a problem repeating what they hear (at least in front of me), so I do allow them to see some movies where this is included. There were a couple of mild innuendo's that I wish weren't there. They went over the head of my younger 2, but I'm sure my 12 yr. old boy "got" them. It was milder than Shrek or Happy Feet.
See it in theater or rent? Available on DVD, so rent! Check out your local RED BOX to rent for $1 a night!
Opinion: The themes in this movie - of being loyal to your friends, persevering - even when others don't believe in you - and the importance of being a mentor/helping others - were all good themes. The movie is a "mockumentary" - done as an interview with one of the characters, and kids may find that slows down the movie. Overall, not the greatest movie, but my kids enjoyed it. I would pick it over Happy Feet anyday!
Rating: (out of 5)
Happy Feet

Starring: voices of: Robin Williams, Elijah Wood, Brittany Murphy, Hugh Jackman, Nicole Kidman
Rated: PG for some rude humor
Type of Movie: Animated Musical
Description: “Happy Feet” is basically a musical with a rather strong environmental message. It is also the story of a quest to find a place in this world, of love and forgiveness, of friends who hold you up and try not to let you down, of sacrifice, courage and fun.
OK for kids? OK, here, I know I will run into some controversy. My answer is "NO". I took some hits from friends when this was out in the theater for not taking my kids to see this. But, I am sticking by it, even after I have watched it.
See it in theater or rent? Old movie, out on DVD
Opinion: After having just rented and watched this movie, I am glad that I did not allow my kids to see it in the theater. We may have walked out at the beginning when they were singing the Prince song that says "You don't have to be beautiful to turn me on, I just need your body baby, from dusk to dawn", or at the song from Salt-n-Pepa "Let's talk about sex, baby." I mean, COME ON! WHY do you need to put those songs in a movie you are promoting to KIDS? Then, you have the spiritual guru guy who announces he is waiting to be "serviced" - who's gonna do it first? He is portrayed as some money seeking televangelist. The adults/grandparents are portrayed as holding them back, and fuddy-duddy's. I liked Mumble, and how he stayed true to himself, even though that was not the norm for his society. I teach my children that we all have different talents, given to us by God, and we should not compare ourselves to others. BUT, kids grow up fast enough, I try to limit the stuff I show them that pushes the envelope on what I think is appropriate. And don't even get me started on the environmentalism preached in this movie . . . . . . .

Yard Sale & Football - What a Weekend!

I am excited about this upcoming weekend. But, not because of the Yard Sale. I really don't like having yard sales. I'm not much on going to them either. I feel so vulnerable with all my stuff out there on display. It's like, "here I am" - do you want me? Maybe that's why I haven't take the plunge and written the book I think I should write. Then, if no one likes it, to me, that is rejection, and unfortunately I take it personally.

Why then am I having a yard sale?

Well, last May, eldest son asked if he could take PIANO lessons (he is learning the sax now - from band at school and went to band camp this past summer). I replied "that would be nice, but there are two problems - 1. We don't have a piano. 2. We have no where to put a piano. Then, after talking to a piano teacher at our church, she suggested a keyboard. An 88 weighted key keyboard. They take up less space, are less expensive, and don't need tuning. So, I told eldest "OK". Keyboards aren't cheap - especially those with 88 weighted keys. It looks like I will be spending at least $600. Thus, the yard sale. I hope to make at least $400 towards the keyboard. Say a prayer for me please! :)

Any yard sale suggestions? Any suggestions on a keyboard brand/type?

I read Death of a Garage Sale Newbie this summer and enjoyed the tidbits of Garage Sale etiquette in that - and I wish I was one of those that like to go and pick around them. But:

1. If my kids don't have something going on early Saturday's - I like to sleep!

2. I have enough junk myself - really don't need to go out and look through other's to get more!

ARE YOU READY FOR SOME FOOTBALL?

OK, I have to admit it's not the actual football that I love so much, though I don't mind it. It's the tailgating, the food, the friends and family, being outside. My Dad has season tickets, he drives his RV out on Friday night and spends Friday and Saturday night at the stadium. We go on Saturday, hang out, eat, eat, eat, eat, and um eat. Dad's best friend owns to restaurants and usually does the cooking for the games - the food is always sooooo good! And I like being around family. My husband and I are so busy during the week, I enjoy getting to spend time with him and my dad. This week we are taking all 3 kids, so it won't be as relaxing as usual - but still fun!

Well, have a great Labor Day weekend - be sure to check here on Monday for the next Giveaway, the announcement of the winner of Chocolate Beach, and the Monday Movie Review!

Book Review - Uncharted by Angela Hunt

Uncharted by Angela Hunt
Wow! You should really read this book! It's hard to discuss without giving away the ending. I guess what it drove home to me was that God sees ME. Not just the outside me, or the me that I "portray" to you, my husband, my kids, or my friends. He sees the comments I snicker as I'm walking into church about a certain person's outfit. He sees me when I apologize with my words and never mean it in my mind. He sees it all. And loves and persues me anyways!
You can click on the title above to read the plot summary and description. I do agree with what it says about this being a bit like "Castaway", "The Big Chill", and "Lost" all mixed together. Hummmm, wonder if this is the direction they are going with the "Lost" show . . . . .
So, pick up a copy of Uncharted and enjoy - it's a quick, interesting read that keeps you turning pages, not wanting to put it down! Oh, and check out Angela Hunt's blog, it's one of my daily must reads!

Notice My First Ad?

Today my first ad from BlogHer has appeared! I am excited about this opportunity for me and honored that they accepted my blog as a site on which they would advertise.
I feel very safe using BlogHer, in knowing there won't be any inappropriate ads put on my blog. I had considered doing the pay-per-post advertising, but I just couldn't grab hold of the idea of me telling you how great a product is when I have not tried it. I'm sure it works great for many people, who have more experience than I do, but it just wasn't the right fit for me right now. So, I hope the ads don't bother you, I hope they interest you! If so, be sure to click on them and see what they are all about.
So far I've seen New Balance Kids shoes and those Harvest Chips being advertised - both are products I have tried and love. I always go to the New Balance Shoe store for my eldest when track season starts. They have great customer service, personalized fitting, and a quality shoe. Harvest Chips are one of my favorite snacks, I really suggest you get your free sample and give them a try!

Movie Review Monday

Movie Review #4

Starring: Tim Allen, John Travolta, Martin Lawrence, William H. Macy, Ray Liotta, Marisa Tomei
Rated: PG-13 for crude and sexual content and some violence
Type of Movie: Comedy
Description: Four middle-aged men decide to take a road trip from Cincinnati to the Pacific in order to get away from their lives which are leading them nowhere. Taking their motorcycles, these "Wild Hogs" tear up the road and eventually stop in New Mexico for a drink not knowing that the bar belongs to the "Del Fuegos", a mean biker gang. When the Del Fuegos steal a bike that belongs to the Wild Hogs, the four men form a plan to steal their bike back.
OK for Kids? No. There is some bad language and though there are no sex scenes, there are some sexual references and overtones that are not appropriate for children.
See it in theater or rent? Well, this is now available at the video store, so I would rent it. If it had been in the theater, I probably would of suggested to wait and rent it. ** Have you heard of RED BOX? It is an awesome Kiosk where you can rent DVDs for $1 per 24 hours! Visit the RED BOX website for a free rental and to find locations near you! It is so easy! Many times, when I have looked at Blockbuster for a movie and they don't have any copies - I go next door to the Harris Teeter where the RED BOX kiosk is located and find it in stock.
Opinion: Wild Hogs surprised me. After seeing the trailers for this film I thought that is going to be one pitiful, stupid movie. And, perhaps it was. But, it was funny too. Funnier than I expected. So, if you want a good laugh, a movie that is not full of the "F" word, and you can tolerate a bit of stupidity, then you will enjoy this movie.

Have you hugged your girl scout today?

My daughter is in her fourth year of girl scouting, she is a junior. This year I am stepping up to be an assistant troop leader. No one else would volunteer, so I did. I think it will be lots of fun and my daughter is excited about me being there. Figured I should appreciate that since eventually she won't want to spend time with me.
So, now I'm off for a WHOLE day of training. Fun!
If you have been a leader, or your daughter is a girl scout, leave me a comment on their favorite thing they've done as a GS, tips for a new leader, warnings, suggestions, etc!
Have a great Saturday!

Summer Reading Update/Book Reviews

Back in June I posted my Summer Reading List. Below is an update/quick review of what I've read so far. How are you doing on your Summer Reading Challenge? If you are participating - let me know, I'd love to see your list!
Split Ends by Kristen Billerbeck - Finished this book. Overall, I enjoyed this book. It was a fluffy summer read, chick lit. I did not enjoy it as much as Kristen's other books. I can't put my finger on why though. I liked the characters, I liked the story. I guess it just felt a little too much like a "fairy tale". The main character leaves her small country town to cut hair in LA/Hollywood. She has a cousin who got her a job and is letting her live with him. The main character is thin and pretty. And yes, the character ventured out and took a chance, but she had lots of crutches there to help her that a normal person wouldn't have if they were to try something that daring. If I wanted to do something like that, I wouldn't have a cousin to pave the way for me and my thin, gorgeous, size 4 body to fit into my cousin's designer clothes and help me be a part of the LA scene.
Read it? YES
Buy it vs. Check it out from Library: Library
Uncharted by Angela Hunt - almost done - review to come soon!
The Elevator by Angela Hunt - Won this book - Woo Hoo!
The Secret Life of Becky Miller by Sharon Hinck
Diva Nashvegas by Rachel Hauck - The follow up to Lost In NashVegas, this book is about a character from the 1st book. You don't need to have read Lost In NashVegas to understand/appreciate this one. I really liked this book, maybe even more then the 1st one. The characters were interesting and the story believable. At first I did have some problems with the ethics of the main character, given this is "Christian fiction" but within contex - it fit - and I was able to see how it worked in the big scope of the plot. Very entertaining, a good summer read.
Read it? YES
Buy or Check It Out: Check it out if they have it, if not, buy! (or be checking back here in the next few months for a PASS IT ON giveaway!)
Par for the Course by Ray Blackston
Quaker Summer by Lisa Samson - Wow! This book changed me. I believe God puts people/things in our lives in His quest to mold us into who we should be. Lisa Samson's books are something He is using to open my eyes to His purpose and the path to getting there. I both appreciate and resent it. I resent it because ignorence is bliss - what I don't know, I don't realize is hurting me. Lisa has a way of making me looking at my Christian walk and then re-evaluating and questioning the path I've choosen to get there. Anyways, the story is a good one, her writing style is easy to read, and you'll be thinking about this book long after you put it down!
Read it? YES!
Buy or Check It Out? BUY! You'll want to read it more then once, or PASS IT ON to a friend!
Sisterchicks in Gondolas by Robin Jones Gunn
Death of a Garage Sale Newbie by Sharon Dunn - This is the first book I read by Sharon Dunn and I really enjoyed it. The characters were fun and the pace of the book was perfect. I didn't want to put it down, just wanted to keep reading to find out the who-done-it!
Read it? YES
Buy or Check It Out? Library if they have it, if not buy it!
Hope Rising by Kim Meeder - Next on my list - just got from the library
Beyond the Shawdows by Robin Lee Hatcher - just got book on CD from library - will be listening to it as I drive around town
Skin by Ted Dekker
Takes the Cake by Linda Evans Shepherd
Yada Yada Prayer Group Gets Caught by Neta Jackson

END OF SUMMER GIVEAWAY

Over at The Pumpkin Patch there is an end of summer giveaway going on. My kids go back to school Monday 8/27. Part of me is looking forward to them going back, but part likes it when they are out. During summer they come to work with me some, go to fun day camps, go to super fun overnight camps, go to grandma's house, go on beach trips. I don't have to make lunches, sign papers, get homework done, hey, during the summer, we might even skip a bath one night!
My 10 favorite summer moments of Summer 2007(in no particular order):
1. Finding my son after he went missing.
2. Picking my two older kids up from 2 weeks of overnight camp.
3. The band concert at the end of eldest son's week of band camp - awesome job!
4. Spending time on the beach at at the pool with the kids.
5. Going to Dolly Parton's Dixie Stampede with the family
6. Playing Putt-Putt with youngest while others were at camp
7. Getting our new puppy in June
8. Starting the new tradition of eating at the table, TOGETHER, Sun - Thur.
9. Getting back in the habit of family and personal devotions
10. Going to the Boys Jr. Olympics Volleyball Competition in Atlanta this July

So, in celebration of the end of summer, I am giving away a very special book. I have procrastinated on giving it away - not sure if I want to part ways with it, or keep for another read through. But, because books are too precious to be read only once, I am going to PASS IT ON! If you would like to win Chocolate Beach, the awesome debut fiction novel from Julie Carobini, leave me a comment. I will randomly draw a number/name on 9/3/07 - the official end of summer to me - but the start of college FOOTBALL season! Woo Hoo! I will also post another drawing on 9/3, so be sure to check back!

Movie Review Monday

Movie Review #3
Starring: John Travolta, Michelle Pfeiffer, Christopher Walken, Amanda Bynes, James Marsden, Queen Latifah, Zac Efron
Rated: Rated PG for language, some suggestive content and momentary teen smoking.
Type of Movie: Comedy, Drama, Action
Description: Tracy Turnblad (Nikki Blonsky), an overweight teenager with all the right moves, is obsessed with the Corny Collins Show. Every day after school, she and her best friend Penny (Amanda Bynes)run home to watch the show and drool over the hot Link Larkin (Zac Efron), much to Tracy's mother Edna's (John Travolta) dismay. After one of the stars of the show leaves, Corny Collins (Jason Marsden) holds auditions to see who will be the next person on the Corny Collins show. With all of the help of her friend Seaweed (Elijah Kelly), Tracy makes it on the show, angering the evil dance queen Amber Von Tussle (Brittany Snow) and her mother Velma (Michelle Pfieffer). Tracy then decides that it's not fair that the black kids can only dance on the Corny Collins Show once a month, and with the help of Seaweed, Link, Penny, Motormouth Maybelle (Queen Latifah), her father (Christopher Walken) and Edna, she's going to integrate the show.....without denting her 'do!
OK for Kids? Not really. I probably wouldn't let my kids watch this until they are 16 or so, if then. There is quite a bit of implied intimacy, and the dancing at some points is the bumping/grinding type. There are a few mild cuss words.
See it in theater or rent? I would suggest that if you were going to see this movie - wait and rent it. It will not lose anything on the smaller screen.
Opinion: Hairspray was a fun movie with a good theme. I took my grandmother to see this movie, she just had to see John Travolta dressed up as a woman! I had never seen the play before. The theme was double-fold but boiled down to "love others" - despite their color or their weight. The cast was great, they all did an excellent job with their parts.

Rating: (out of 5)

My First Award!

Yipee! WooHoo! I am soooooo happy and surprised! I won my first blog award! Miss Paula at "Gathering of Friends" awarded me the "Nice" Award! I enjoy Miss Paula's blog, be sure to check it out.
"This award will be awarded to those that are just nice people , good blog friends and those that inspire good feelings and inspiration! Those that care about others that are there to lend support or those that are just a positive influence in our blogging world!"

There are many times in my past that I have not been "nice" and even in my daily life it is a struggle to do the "nice" thing when I feel like doing what comes naturally. Praises to my King, Jesus Christ, who has forgiven me for me many very not "nice" things I have done and continues molding me into the person He wants me to be. Thank ya Jesus for not giving up on me!

Now, it is my duty, and honor to nominate 7 people for the "Nice" Award.

Scamp's Place - I just started reading this blog about two weeks ago. Shawna has been a big encouragment and I enjoy reading her blog.

Life With My X-Men - Kristiem10 talks with a lot of humor and patience about living with her wonderful kids!

Just Eat Your Cupcake - Maria tells it like it is! I LOVE Maria's stories of life with her kids.

Preacher's Daughter - I really identify with a lot that Jamie has to say. She has a new book out that I am anxious to get and read!

Lorie's Stitch In Time - Though it looks like she's already gotten this award, I still have to give it to her! Seeing her menus was a bit of the inspiration that led me to start making the family eat dinner together at the table, instead of in front of the TV. I have tried several of her recipes and enjoy her daily postings.

Book Splurge - Cee Cee does what I like best - gives away books! Can't get any nicer than that!

Overwhelmed With Joy - Overwhelmed has great recipes and heart-touching posts on her quest to become a foster parent/adopt. It's a must read!

Thank you all very much for the way you touch my life. I am very blessed with the way each of you share your life!

Tell Oprah What You Are Reading

I got a poll from Oprah that asked what I was reading this summer, my favorites, etc. Click here to go to the poll and fill it in yourself! I hope lots of people go and tell her what you're reading - it could be a great plug for many of the Christian Authors we all read!

PS - if your book has appeared on my blog, rest assured I listed it on her poll! So, just ya'll wait, you'll be all getting invites to Oprah's show soon, cause next to Gail we are BFF!

Have a great weekend!

Favorite Preacher?

One of my favorite preachers I have never heard in person. It is Dr. Erwin Lutzer from the Moody Church. I love his Running to Win radio program! Someday, I hope to hear him in person!

My favorite sermon that I've ever heard in person was by Tate Throndson, our youth pastor at the time. It was a long time ago, probably around 2000. He preached after our Christmas play "10,000 Hallelujahs". I loved the play, it's still my favorite! Then Tate preached, it was just a wonderful night. I have this theory that there are "fiction people" and "non-fiction people". I am a "fiction person". I prefer to read fiction. It's very seldom I read a non-fiction book. I just get bored/bogged down in details. I LOVE a good story. Tate was a preacher who used stories from his own life to relate to the Bible/lesson. His preaching always "clicked" for me! He is now starting a church somewhere in Colorado. If you live near this church, I highly suggest you stop by and hear this very gifted teacher of the Word!

Another of my favorite preachers was at one time, also a youth pastor at our church. HWH and I worked with him in the youth department. Anthony Clayborne taught me a lot about what it means to be a Christian, live as a Christian, and not let others define (or confine) my relationship with Christ (others at that time mainly being my church). His lessons taught me to deal with a lot of the guilt I had in my life, helped me look to Christ for courage to believe and do things Christ was calling me to do/believe that others had me believing were wrong. I haven't talked to Anthony since he moved on to another church, but I pray that God is richly blessing him, his family, and the youth/parents he works with.

Who is your favorite preacher/teacher - and why?

PASS IT ON BOOK GIVEAWAY!

Because Books are too Precious to Only be Read Once . . . . .

PASS IT ON!

Entry Deadline: Noon, Friday, August 24th

by Janette Oke

Summary: She ventured West with the man she loved, but in one day her world crumbled around her...First around in 1979, Love Come Softly has become a beloved classic with over one million copies sold. A generation of readers has laughed and wept and rejoiced with Marty and Clark Davis whose tragic circumstances threw them together on the frontier prairies of the 1800s.

My Opinion: OK, to be honest, I am not a Janette Oke reader. I have tried to read her books, but am just not able to get into them. She is a very popular author, as a matter of fact, I'll be surprised to get a lot of entries for this - because I bet most everyone has read it! I have seen the movie, and really enjoyed that. You know there are some authors that you just click with and others you don't - for me Janette Oke and Jan Karon are two that I don't care to read (as well as Jack London - oh torture! too much description, too many adjectives, just give me the story already!)
To Enter: Leave me a comment below by Noon - 8/24/07! Good Luck!
